For those used to the weekly meetings, we have decided to reduce the frequency of the full meeting to something more managable: Once a month.  Between that, those working on event planning can meet online or in person to get things going and tell us about their progress at the monthly meetings.

Annual Peace Day in Halifax

August 6, 2008

Peace Pavilion in Dartmouth, on the waterfront (Near Alderney Landing)

 3:30-4:30 Join us for our 4th Annual Peace Day Ceremony that will include greetings from the Hakodate Friendship Society, Poetry, Music, Singing and a Dedication of Catlinite Stone used to make Sacred Peace Pipes by Mi'kmaq Elder Bill Lewis.  

 Speakers include: Dr. Thomas Turay (Centre for Development and Peace Education Sierra Leone), and Andrea Hill-Lehr (author of "A Mother's Road to Kandahar").

5-6:30 (Helen Creighten Room, Alderney Public Library): Free Film Screening "Hope for the Future" with Students for Teaching Peace.

Film Showing: War Resisters

   The Halifax manifestation of the cross-Canada demonstration in support of War Resisters who have requested asylum in Canada rather than be forced to fight in the illegal occupation of Iraq is being organized by SCAW (Students Coalition Against War).   They will be showing either "Let Them Stay" or "Yes Sir, No Sir".

Scott Taylor, a former professional soldier, has been editor and publisher of Esprit de Corps, an Ottawa-based magazine since 1988. Since January 2007, Scott Taylor has made two unembedded trips into Afghanistan. In the course of those visits he has interviewed former warlords,

A women's rights advocate who has been dubbed "the bravest woman in Afghanistan", she rose to prominence nationally and internationally in 2003, after publicly denouncing the inclusion of "warlords" within the current NATO-supported government of Afghanistan.

Patrick Elie-Haiti Human Rights Speaker PDF Print E-mail

Patrick Elie, a former cabinet minister in the Aristide government of Haiti and a leading social justice activist in Haiti, is on a five-week speaking tour across Canada.
Patrick Elie was

* Involved since 1967 in the fight against the Duvalier dictatorship. Graduated with a BSc in biochemistry from the University of Sherbooke, Quebec in 1972. Earned a PhD in organic chemistry from McGill University in 1976. Professor of biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Haiti, 1980-1991.

* Helped save Jean-Bertrand Aristide's life on September 11, 1988. Was the informal head of  Jean-Bertrand Aristide's security detail during the 1990 electoral campaign.

* National Coordinator of the fight against drug trafficking in Haiti, 1991-1994. 

* Secretary of State for National Defense, 1994-1995. Instrumental in creating the National Police and dismantling the Haitian Army.

* President of Fondation Eko Vwa Jan Dominique, an organization which aims to pursue the work of the late journalist Jean Léopold Dominique, assassinated on April 3, 2000. Founding member of S.O.S. (Sant Obsèvasyon Sitwayen) a citizen watchdog group, created after February 29, 2004 coup and whose motto is; "Politics is too important to be abandoned to the politicians."
